Chess Wizards

Enter into the magical and exciting world of chess with Chess Wizards! You will participate in epic chess games, fun and interactive lessons, tournaments, team matches, trivia and more! Our specialized classes are a blast for everyone as young as kindergarten and as old as eighth grade. Whether you have been playing chess for your entire life and want to improve, are brand new to the game, or you just want to have a fun experience with your friends - Chess Wizards is the place for you!

Trendy Crafts – Room to Bloom

Join Trendy Crafts this Spring for a new line up of fresh crafts for the season. Projects this session include LEGO accessories, nature inspired decor, a special Mother's Day gift, emoji magnets, and so much more! At Trendy Crafts we take social crafting to the next level, always using the latest supplies and techniques.

Archaeology: Digging the Past

Ever wonder what went on in the past? Join us and learn the secrets that artifacts can tell you, if you know how to ask the right questions! We’ll learn how archaeological sites get buried and how to make sense of the layers they have. We’ll also identify artifacts and learn how they were used. Some of the artifacts might need repair, so we’ll help put them back together, and make a museum-style display. In the end, you’ll be able to figure out what was going on, way, way, way back before your grandparents were born!  Taught by Dr. Heidi Lennstrom, Westside School’s university-trained archaeologist, who’s done fieldwork from Oregon to Peru.

K-5th Grade

 Creative Coding 4 Kids – Core Class

Let’s get programming!  This class teaches students to code by helping them make their own custom video games! Our project-based, multi-level classes are amazingly fun yet very effective in teaching creative problem solving AND emotional resilience. Students have fun bringing their ideas to life, as they iterate through the emotional cycle of Coding (idea->excitement->effort->frustration->more effort->triumph!) With our support and positive encouragement. Repeating this cycle not only builds great coders, but more importantly, develops emotional persistence that will help students enjoy taking on new challenges in all aspects of their lives.

Students new to Scratch software will learn fundamental elements of coding, while those with previous experience will enjoy a unique mix of coding challenges, techniques, and hacks. Our classes are designed to be repeated an infinite number of times. As students complete a class, they go up one level, like in video games, and increase their coding skills, speed and proficiency.

Gadgets & Gizmos: Lego Engineering

This Lego Engineering unit is all about the fun of doing something with what you’ve built -- kids will love playing with their creations! We sneak in lots of learning, too – understanding probability in the “3-in-a-row” game model, learning how gears work by building a paper crinkler, and learning about friction and symmetry with the spinning top lesson. We'll discuss how machines can be used to create art and build a working spin art machine with Lego Bricks, figuring out why the paint flies away from the center of the plate. Don’t miss out!
